Fishing is the most important economic activity along the shores of Lake Victoria in Homa Bay County, Kenya. These activities support thousands of households through fish harvesting, processing, transportation, trading, and other related enterprises. However, despite its significant contribution to food security and local economies, many development interventions are implemented without sufficient household-level data needed to design interventions that respond to the realities of fishing communities.
At Mescripts Data and Research Center, in collaboration with Lake Front Fisheries Limited, we have launched a one-month fisheries participation and livelihood survey targeting 350 fishing households in Koginga Beach and Sikri Island. The survey aims to generate evidence that will support sustainable fisheries development, strengthen livelihoods, and inform future interventions with fishing households in the region.
The survey will provide valuable insights into:
- - Household income dynamics and economic resilience.
- - Productivity challenges facing fishing communities.
- - Access to productive assets and financial services.
- - Gender inclusion in fisheries value chains.
- - Institutional support through Beach Management Units and cooperatives.
- - Capacity-building and extension service needs.
Before the survey began, we held consultative meetings with community leaders and Beach Management Unit (BMU) officials to introduce the study, explain its objectives, and build local ownership. Our trained field researchers are working closely with community leaders and local stakeholders to ensure that the data collection process is participatory and inclusive.
